Mental Health Treatment
Comprehensive psychiatric care combining medication management with psychotherapy. Board-certified psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience treating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, and other conditions.
Our Approach to Psychiatric Treatment
Mental health treatment isn't one-size-fits-all. Some people need medication to correct brain chemistry imbalances. Others benefit primarily from psychotherapy. Many need both. At Brain Mind Harmony, we assess each person individually and develop a treatment plan that addresses their specific situation.
Dr. Marcus is trained in both medication management and multiple forms of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. This means you don't have to see one doctor for medication and another for therapy—you can receive comprehensive care from a single provider who understands your complete picture.
If you're also dealing with substance use, you won't be referred elsewhere. Dr. Marcus is dual board-certified in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, allowing her to treat co-occurring disorders together rather than separately.
Conditions We Treat
Brain Mind Harmony provides treatment for a wide range of psychiatric conditions. Below is an overview of the conditions we most commonly treat, along with honest information about what each involves.
Depression & Major Depressive Disorder
Depression is more than sadness—it's a persistent condition that affects how you think, feel, and function. Symptoms can include low mood, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and thoughts of worthlessness or death. Depression responds well to treatment, typically a combination of medication and therapy. Most people see significant improvement, though treatment takes time and often requires adjustment.
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety becomes a disorder when worry and fear interfere with daily life. This includes generalized anxiety disorder (persistent, excessive worry), panic disorder (recurrent panic attacks), and social anxiety (intense fear of social situations). Treatment usually involves therapy—particularly cognitive behavioral therapy—and sometimes medication. The goal isn't to eliminate anxiety entirely, but to reduce it to manageable levels and give you tools to cope.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder involves episodes of depression alternating with episodes of mania or hypomania (elevated mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, impulsive behavior). It's a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management, usually with mood stabilizers or other medications. With proper treatment, most people with bipolar disorder can live stable, productive lives—but it requires consistent medication adherence and regular monitoring.
PTSD & Trauma
Post-traumatic stress disorder develops after exposure to a traumatic event and involves re-experiencing symptoms (flashbacks, nightmares), avoidance, negative changes in mood and thinking, and heightened reactivity. PTSD is treatable through specialized therapies like EMDR and trauma-focused CBT, sometimes combined with medication. Treatment can be difficult—it requires confronting painful memories—but it works.
ADHD (Adults and Children)
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder isn't just a childhood condition. Many adults struggle with ADHD symptoms: difficulty focusing, disorganization, impulsivity, restlessness. Proper diagnosis is important, as ADHD can look like other conditions. Treatment typically involves stimulant or non-stimulant medication along with behavioral strategies. Medication is highly effective for most people, though finding the right dose may take adjustment.
OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)
OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. It's more than being neat or organized—it's a disabling condition that can consume hours of each day. Treatment involves a specific type of therapy called exposure and response prevention (ERP), sometimes combined with medication. OCD is challenging to treat but responds well to proper care.
Psychotic Disorders & Schizophrenia
Psychotic disorders involve a break from reality—hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking. Schizophrenia is the most well-known, but there are other psychotic conditions as well. These are serious disorders requiring medication, typically antipsychotics. With treatment, many people with psychotic disorders can manage their symptoms and function in daily life, though it requires ongoing care and support.
Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are long-standing patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that cause distress and impair functioning. We treat borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and others. These conditions are challenging but treatable, primarily through specialized psychotherapy approaches. Progress is usually gradual and requires commitment to the therapeutic process.
Other Conditions We Treat

- Specific Phobias — Excessive fear of specific objects or situations
- Intermittent Explosive Disorder — Episodes of impulsive, aggressive behavior
- Trichotillomania — Compulsive hair pulling
- Eating Disorders — Including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder

Treatment Modalities
We use a range of evidence-based treatments, tailored to each patient's needs and preferences.
Medication Management
Psychiatric medications—antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, anti-anxiety medications, stimulants—work by affecting brain chemistry. When indicated, they can be highly effective. Dr. Marcus holds a master certification in psychopharmacology, ensuring expert medication selection and management. We monitor for effectiveness and side effects, adjusting as needed. Medication isn't always necessary, but when it is, it can make other treatments possible.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic therapy explores unconscious patterns—the thoughts, feelings, and experiences that shape behavior without your awareness. Through this process, you can understand why you think and act the way you do, not just manage symptoms but address root causes. Dr. Marcus completed four years of psychoanalytic training at the NYU Psychoanalytic Institute, giving her deep expertise in this approach.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a practical, structured therapy that helps identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. It's highly effective for depression, anxiety, OCD, and other conditions. Unlike psychodynamic therapy, which explores the past, CBT focuses on present thoughts and behaviors and teaches specific skills you can use immediately.
EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized treatment for trauma and PTSD. It involves processing traumatic memories while focusing on external stimuli (typically eye movements). Research shows EMDR can significantly reduce trauma symptoms in a relatively short time.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
MBCT combines cognitive therapy with mindfulness practices, teaching you to observe thoughts without getting caught up in them. It's particularly effective for preventing depression relapse and managing anxiety.
Psychoanalytic Therapy
Building on her psychodynamic training, Dr. Marcus also offers classical psychoanalytic therapy for patients seeking deep, intensive exploration of the unconscious mind. This approach involves more frequent sessions and longer-term work, aiming for fundamental personality change rather than symptom relief alone.
Other Approaches
- Motivational Enhancement Therapy — Helping patients find their own motivation for change
- Group Therapy — Learning from and supporting others with similar challenges
- Christian Counseling — For patients who want to integrate faith into treatment
- Positive Psychology — Building strengths, not just treating weaknesses
- Life Coaching — Goal-oriented support for personal and professional development
Specialized & Advanced Treatments
For treatment-resistant cases or specific clinical needs, we offer several advanced treatment options.
Ketamine Treatment
For patients with severe or treatment-resistant depression who haven't responded to traditional medications, ketamine treatment may be an option. Ketamine works differently than standard antidepressants and can provide rapid relief. This treatment is only appropriate for specific cases after careful evaluation.
Spravato (Esketamine)
Spravato is an FDA-approved nasal spray form of ketamine for treatment-resistant depression. It's administered in-office under medical supervision and can be effective when other treatments have failed.
Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy
Hormonal imbalances can contribute to psychiatric symptoms, particularly in perimenopause, menopause, and andropause. Dr. Marcus is certified in anti-aging medicine and bio-identical hormonal therapy, allowing her to address these factors when relevant.
Medical Marijuana Evaluation
When clinically indicated and legal requirements are met, Dr. Marcus can evaluate patients for medical marijuana certification. This is considered on a case-by-case basis when other treatments have been ineffective.
Telehealth
For patients who prefer remote appointments or have difficulty traveling, we offer telehealth visits. These work well for medication management and many forms of therapy, though some treatments require in-person attendance.
